Users running IPVanish on their router with a PPTP configuration should switch to OpenVPN. It is supported on Windows, macOS, Android, Fire TV, Linux, Chrome OS, and some routers. OpenVPN is an open-source project that allows for multiple authentication methods and offers relatively fast speeds. ![]() WireGuard is supported on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. It is designed to be faster, simpler, more secure, and lighter than other protocols. WireGuard is the newest, cutting-edge VPN protocol. Generally speaking, we recommend you use the WireGuard or OpenVPN protocols when possible. What VPN protocol should I use instead of PPTP? Additionally, users who are running IPVanish on routers and manual configurations will also be unable to use the PPTP protocol. However, please note that any connection attempts with this protocol will be unsuccessful and result in an error. Users who are still using the previous version of the Windows app may see the option to connect to IPVanish using the PPTP protocol. We recommend all users update to the latest version of our apps if and when possible. We will discontinue PPTP support officially with the latest release of our IPVanish Windows app v 4.0.8, available May 31st, 2022. With multiple viable alternatives available, we feel now is the right time to end PPTP support. Out of obligation to protect the privacy and security of those who use our VPN service, and in accordance with industry best practices, we can no longer support the PPTP protocol in any capacity. These resulting performance issues effectively undermine any speed benefits PPTP offers, making it unsuitable for modern use. While there are ways to enhance the security of the protocol, they can be complex and lead to performance issues. There are known security vulnerabilities and underlying authentication issues with PPTP, and it is now considered an obsolete method for implementing VPN connections. While the PPTP protocol was technically still available for a very small group of IPVanish users on Windows, we’ve been phasing it out for years. Here’s everything you need to know about the removal of PPTP support on IPVanish. With this in mind, we will no longer support the PPTP protocol moving forward. Yet as security advancements are achieved, the technology they improve upon can be made obsolete. The aim of these changes was to ensure our users have the ability to establish the fastest and most secure VPN connections possible using the latest technology, regardless of their device type. In recent years, for example, we’ve added IKEv2 support to our Android and Amazon apps, and WireGuard® support to our desktop and mobile apps. And as VPN protocols continue to evolve, the protocols we’ve supported have changed over time. IPVanish has always supported multiple VPN protocols and connection types to make our service adaptable to all user needs. Keep reading to learn why we’re discontinuing support, when support will officially end, and what protocol you should use instead. PPTP will no longer be supported at IPVanish. ![]()
